Metro – Vickers Road

Client: Pomerleau, Metro

Location: Etobicoke, ON

Role: Subcontractor to the Construction Manager

Contract Type: Design-Bid-Build

This project consisted of the construction of a new Automated Cold Storage Facility for Metro Inc. Metric was tasked to complete new site servicing systems including storm, sewer, watermain, two storm water cultec systems, and four valve chambers. Metric was also tasked to complete cut and fill excavation works within the site, totaling to 24,340 m3 hauled offsite, 24,100 m3 cut to fill, and 10,342 m3 of granular material imported to site. This site was a unique project in the sense that it contained 3 differentiating types of material classifications (Type 1, Type 2 (Sars and EC exceedances) and non-hazardous material), that had to be handled and removed off-site following different environmental guidelines.

The Metro Vickers Project was very dynamic as work progressed quickly with many different subcontractors on site at any given time, along with previously existing and newly introduced environmental hazards (such as COVID-19). Thus, Metric successfully implemented and adapted their site safety controls to ensure the safety of all employees on site. This project demonstrated Metric’s ability to complete a project of a high level of complexity with precision, while adhering to the necessary environmental guidelines and practices to complete this project on schedule.

Major sewer components of the work included the following:

  • 772 m of storm sewer constructed with pipe sizes varying from 200mm to 900mm
  • Construction of 330 m of 1.8m x 0.9m box culvert
  • Construction of two storm water management tanks with 14,763.7 m3 and 16,424 m3 in capacity
  • 432 m of 200mm sanitary sewers
  • 183 m of watermain connecting the newly constructed building to the City watermain within the roadway
  • Construction a 4 precast valve chambers (4.6m x 2.1m) near Vickers Road for the watermain system entering the site

Major earth components of the work included the following:

  • Excavation and site grading of the entire property limits (64,662 m2)
  • 24,340 m3 of material hauled offsite
  • 24,100 m3 of material cut-to-fill on site
  • 10,342 m3 of material cut to fill on site
  • Footing excavation for 840 m for the building footprint
  • 24,884 m2 of Gran B Type 2 infill inside the building footprint
