Client: Toronto and Region Conservation Authority
Location: Toronto, ON
Role: General Contractor
Contract Type: Design-Build
This project is located along the Don River and consists of two sections: the first is located from the Lower Don Trail to the Gatineau Corridor Trail at Bermondsey Road, the second spans from the existing East Don Trail off Wynford Heights to Wigmore Park. Both sections of the project are within lands under jurisdiction of the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. The goal of the project was to reduce the gaps within the existing trail system, not only to create a safe travel route, but also to increase access to the natural environment and recreational opportunities. The proximity of the site to the Don River has required the enforcement of numerous environmental protection policies including measures for tree protection, water quality, and sediment and erosion control. Achieved under the design-build format, this project required the coordination of numerous parties to complete the works within the narrow timeline.
Metric was responsible for all the following works within this project:
- Design-build of multiple single span bridges crossing over the East Don River; spans ranging between 40 and 60m
- Design-build of multiple steel boardwalks throughout the project
- Installation, maintenance, and removal of construction access bridges
- Installation, maintenance, and removal of temporary access roads through Environmentally Sensitive Areas
- Site clearing, grubbing and off-site haulage and disposal of existing vegetation.
- Installation of perimeter safety fence, signage, erosion and sediment controls, and tree protection fencing
- Site grading, cut/fill, haulage and off-site disposal of surplus excavated material
- Installation of heavy-duty asphalt paving including granular base ranging from 3 – 4 m width
- Placement of armourstone retaining wall structures at areas of potential slope instability
- Site restoration including fine grading, drainage control, topsoil and seeding
This project highlights our skills in working in an environmentally sensitive area on a project with numerous stakeholders.
